The following is a list of APP onboarding roles, responsibilities, and process.
Roles & Responsibilities
Clinical Preceptor
- Assigned to each new or transitioning APP
- Ensures orientation and onboarding are completed
- Organizes division-specific onboarding (may delegate tasks)
- Serves as the main point of contact for the APP
- Coordinates gradual increase of clinical workload
APP Supervisor & Department Administrator
- Develop onboarding plan with Clinical Preceptor
- Order laptop and request CSAR (HealthLink/computer access)
- Provide oversight and guidance
- Conduct check-ins at 30, 60, and 90 days
- Maintain communication with division leadership
Division leadership (Division Chief, MPA, Clinic Manager, Marketing)
- Participate in initial logistical planning meeting (~2 months before start)
- Clarify workspace and coverage expectations
- Provide welcome communications
- Offer input on orientation planning
Onboarding Timeline
About 2 months before start
- Logistical planning meeting scheduled
- Discuss desk space, coverage locations, and role expectations
- Supervisor orders equipment and access
- Supervisor shares orientation resources and sample checklists
First week
- Monday: UW Health New Employee Orientation (virtual)
(internal transfers may skip and start role on Monday) - Tuesday: APP Orientation
- Wednesday: HealthLink Orientation (inpt/outpt)
- Thursday: AM APP Orientation, PM Professional Portrait
- Friday: Begin division-specific onboarding
First 90 Days
- Gradual ramp-up of clinical responsibilities
- Regular check-ins with Division Chief (and optional Supervisor)
- Supervisor meets with APP at 30, 60, and 90 days
- Address concerns before 90 days if extension needed
Ongoing (Months 3–12)
- Continue quarterly check-ins
- New grad APPs: typically 1 year to reach comfort
- Experienced APPs: typically 6–9 months to reach comfort
Additional notes
- 90-day probation period is firm — address concerns early
- APP Office offers a New Grad Program: monthly meetings for 6 months
- Each division may approach onboarding differently — the Clinical Preceptor coordinates division efforts
